TNLA Region IV WaterWise Landscape Display

In cooperation with the Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden

Beautiful landscapes and wise water management go together. good horticultural practice includes putting the right plant in the right place, and providing only the minimum inputs such as water and feritlizer.

The Texas Nursery & Landscape Asociation Region IV is committed to this approach of creating a healthy and sustainable environment that preserves and protects our most valuable natural resource - water.

Our WaterWise Landscape Demonstration project at the Dallas Arboretum provides practical examples of how YOU can create a beautiful outdoor environment while addressing the important issue of water conservation.

WaterWise Basics

An adequate supply of high quality water has become a critical issue for the future prosperity of Texas. Booming populations have increased the demand on the state’s already limited supply of high quality water. In addition, seasonal fluctuations in rainfall and periodic droughts have created a feast-to-famine cycle in Texas.

In urban areas of Texas, about 25 percent of the water supply is used for landscape and garden watering. Much of this water is used to maintain traditionally high water-demanding landscapes, or it is simply applied inefficiently.
In an attempt to reduce the excessive water use, TNLA-Region IV is educating Texans on the principles of WaterWise landscaping to help preserve and protect our most valuable natural resource. Traditional landscapes may incorporate one or two principles of water conservation, but they do not utilize the entire concept to reduce landscape water use effectively.

The Seven Basic Principles of Landscape Water Conservation

By incorporating these seven principles, you can help create a healthy and sustainable landscape environment.

Planning and design
Soil analysis
Practical turf areas

Appropriate plant selection
Efficient irrigation
Use of mulches
Appropriate maintenance

Earth Kind - Environmental Stewardship:

Earth Kind uses research-proven techniques to provide maximum gardening and landscape enjoyment while preserving and protecting our environment. The objective of Earth Kind is to combine the best of organic and traditional gardening and landscaping principles to create a horticultural system based on realworld effectiveness and environmental responsibility.

The principal goals of Earth Kind include:

bulletWater conservation
bulletThe safe use and handling of fertilizers & pesticides in the landscape
bulletReduction of yard wastes entering urban landfills
bulletLandscaping for energy conservation

As your interest and knowledge in these areas grows, you will have an increased awareness of the many programs, practices and activities that are Earth Kind. Working together we can make a difference in conserving and protecting our valuable natural resources.

Texas Urban Landscape Guide:

The Texas Urban Landscape Guide is a resource of science-based information related to the design, installation, and maintenance of WaterWise landscapes for the principal plant adaptability regions in Texas.

The type of information needed to implement WaterWise landscape practices varies considerably depending upon whether you are a homeowner looking for information to assist in designing your home landscape, a Green Industry professional seeking information of a specific nature for a business application, or an employee of a municipal water management agency needing specific guidelines related to urban landscape water use.

That's why we have designed the Urban Landscape Guide along three separate tracks. Much of the written information, including links to other appropriate sites, differs in the tracks; the PlantSelector database is common to all. Just enter the track that describes the type of information you need.
